Boiler Troubleshooting: Simple Steps to Get Your Heating Back On
Is your boiler acting up? Don't worry! Here’s a friendly guide to help you troubleshoot some common boiler issues from the comfort of your own home. 1. Boiler Isn’t Turning On: Check the power supply: Ensure your boiler is plugged in and switched on. Inspect your fuse box: Make sure none of the switches have tripped. 2. Boiler Has No Pressure or Low Pressure: Check the pressure gauge: Ideally, your boiler pressure should be between 1 and 1.5 bar. Re-pressurise your boiler: Follow your boiler manual to top up the pressure safely. 3. Radiators Not Heating Up: Check your radiator valves: Make sure they're fully open. Bleed your radiators: Use a radiator key to let trapped air out, helping them heat efficiently. 4. Boiler Making Unusual Noises: Identify unusual sounds: Gurgling often indicates air in the system, banging could indicate low water pressure. Bleed the radiators or re-pressurise the boiler (as above) to resolve. 5. Hot Water Not Working Properly: Check thermostat settings: Ensure your hot water thermostat is set correctly. Inspect the boiler timer: Verify it’s set to come on at the correct times. Still Having Issues? If you’ve tried these steps but your boiler still isn’t working as expected—or if you’re uncomfortable attempting any of these steps—don't hesitate to reach out! Radiator Troubleshooting: Easy Fixes to Keep Your Home Warm
If your radiators aren’t working as they should, don’t panic! There are a few simple things you can check before needing to call for help. Here’s a friendly step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot common radiator problems. 1. Radiator Feels Cold at the Top, Warm at the Bottom: Likely cause: Air trapped in the system. Fix: Bleed your radiator using a radiator key to release the trapped air. Make sure you have a cloth or container ready to catch any water. 2. Radiator Feels Cold at the Bottom, Warm at the Top: Likely cause: Sludge or debris buildup inside the radiator. Fix: This may require a power flush by a professional. For now, try turning off all other radiators except the one with the issue to force hot water through it. 3. One Radiator Isn’t Heating at All: Check the radiator valve: Make sure both valves (on either side of the radiator) are open. Balance your radiators: This involves adjusting valves to ensure even heating—check your boiler manual or online guides. 4. All Radiators Are Cold: Check your boiler: It might not be running properly (see our boiler troubleshooting blog!). Check system pressure: If it’s too low, your central heating may not circulate. 5. Radiators Are Only Warm When Hot Water Is On: Likely cause: Your system may need adjustment. Fix: Check your boiler settings to make sure heating is set separately from hot water. Not Confident? Troubleshooting TRV and Radbot Issues: Get Smart Heating Back on Track
Having trouble with your thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) or Radbot smart radiator controls? Don’t worry—we’ve got some simple tips to help you get things working again, without needing to pick up the phone. 1. TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valve) Not Adjusting Temperature Check the valve head: Make sure it’s not loose or stuck. Gently turn it from low to high to see if the pin inside moves. Stuck pin fix: Unscrew the valve head and gently press the pin down with a blunt object (like the back of a spoon). It should spring back up. Still no change? If the pin stays stuck or doesn’t move freely, the valve body might need replacing—contact us for support. 2. TRV Radiator Always Cold Check the valve setting: Ensure the TRV is turned up to a warmer setting. Valve stuck closed: See the stuck pin fix above. A stiff valve can stop hot water from entering the radiator. Other radiators working fine? This likely confirms it’s an isolated valve issue. 3. Radbot Not Responding Check the batteries: Replace with new AA batteries and ensure they are inserted correctly. Reposition Radbot: Make sure it’s fitted tightly to the valve and hasn’t been accidentally knocked loose. Check for error lights: Flashing red lights or no lights may indicate power or connection issues. 4. Radbot Radiator Not Heating Up Check the schedule: Radbot uses room occupancy to heat only when needed. If no movement is detected, it may not trigger heat. Manually override: Press the boost button (+) to open the valve temporarily and check if heat comes through. Other rooms heating? If yes, Radbot may just be in energy-saving mode. 5. Radbot Making Clicking Sounds Normal function: Some clicking is expected as Radbot adjusts the valve. Excessive clicking or no movement: This may suggest a mechanical issue. Try removing and reinstalling the unit. Need Help? If you're still having issues with your TRVs or Radbot units—or you just don’t feel confident trying any of the steps above—email us at info@cteco.co.uk. Air Source Heat Pump Troubleshooting: Quick Fixes You Can Try at Home
Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) are efficient and reliable, but like any heating system, they can sometimes run into issues. Here’s a helpful, friendly guide to troubleshoot common ASHP problems before picking up the phone. 1. No Heating or Hot Water Check the thermostat: Make sure it’s set to the right temperature and mode (heating or hot water). Inspect the controller or display: Are there any error messages? Make a note of them. Power supply check: Ensure the heat pump is switched on and hasn’t tripped at the fuse box. 2. Unit Is Running but Not Heating Effectively Blocked outdoor unit: Make sure the fan and outdoor coils are clear of leaves, snow, or debris. Check room settings: The system may be in eco or low mode, which reduces output. Too many radiators off? Your system may be struggling to circulate heat properly. Keep a few radiators open throughout the home. 3. Strange Noises Popping or gurgling: Usually air in the system—try bleeding radiators. Whirring or vibration: May be normal compressor or fan operation, but ensure the unit is level and mounted securely. Banging or clunking: Could indicate a fault. If persistent, contact us. 4. Ice Build-Up on Outdoor Unit Normal in cold weather: Most systems defrost automatically. Still icy after defrost cycle? There could be an issue with the defrost settings or airflow. Turn the unit off and remove debris gently, then monitor. 5. Poor Efficiency or Rising Bills Dirty filters: Check and clean indoor air filters regularly. Outdoor obstructions: Clear around the outdoor unit for proper airflow. Incorrect settings: Check for excessively high flow temps or boost settings that may be driving up energy use. When to Get in Touch If your heat pump is showing error codes, isn’t responding to your settings, or you’re unsure about what to do next, don’t hesitate to reach out. Send us an email at info@cteco.co.uk, and one of our helpful team members will be in touch to support you. We’re here to make your home energy-efficient, cosy, and stress-free!
